Ohio is Ready to Take Flight in Advancing Air Mobility

The time to invest in autonomous and advanced mobility is now and Ohio will lead the way

When it comes to aviation, no state stands above Ohio in the development of Advancing Air Mobility technology. From the origin of powered flight more than a hundred years ago, to the latest in autonomous aerospace mobility, Ohio is on the leading edge of aviation including drone and advanced mobility. Ohio is also an ideal place for testing new aerial technologies because it is home to Wright-Patterson Air Force Base (WPAFB), the largest single-site employer, as well as the Air Force Materiel Command (AFMC), the Air Force Research Lab (AFRL), the Life Cycle Management Center (LCMC), the Air Force Institute of Technology and the National Air and Space Intelligence Center.

In Ohio, you can:

  • Be close to integral federal installations, including the Wright-Patterson Air Force Base and NASA Glenn Research Center, key to the nation’s leadership in advanced and autonomous mobility research and operations.
  • Take flight under Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) authorization.
  • Leverage FlyOhio initiatives including the smart mobility corridor, Transportation Research Center (TRC), and SkyVision, a ground-based detect-and-avoid radar system, for development and testing.
  • Capitalize on Ohio’s generations of expertise in automotive, aerospace, and advanced manufacturing.

Agility Prime
Agility Prime is a non-traditional program seeking to accelerate the commercial market for Advanced Air Mobility vehicles (i.e., "flying cars"). This new market is vital for the advancement of the national security strategy of the United States and will need the support of a domestic manufacturing and supply chain environment built expressly for it to succeed. Ohio is uniquely positioned to support the Agility Prime mission because of its smart mobility infrastructure, proximity to Agility Prime leadership, Air Force testing capabilities, airworthiness expertise at WPAFB, as well as leading-edge research expertise across the state.

Ohio’s work in developing research for unmanned aerial systems (UAS) makes it an ideal location for Agility Prime contractors to establish operations. In fact, the Springfield-Beckley Municipal Airport is home to the Ohio UAS Center and SkyVision, a beyond-visual-line-of-sight range operated in partnership with the Air Force Research Lab (AFRL) and the state of Ohio. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) granted the AFRL a certificate of authorization to fly and test unmanned aircraft and other advanced aerospace technologies beyond visual line of sight within a 200-square-mile airspace around the Springfield-Beckley Municipal Airport. Investing in Ohio means not waiting on FAA authorization, which could help put your project on the fast track to mission accomplished.

LIFT Off: Ohio Welcomes Flying Car HEXA

Ohio has welcomed its first “flying car.” HEXA by LIFT Aircraft is an all-electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) single-passenger wingless multicopter ultralight. Bringing this flying car to Ohio for continued research and testing was made possible through public and private partnerships, including the U.S. Air Force’s AFWERX program, Governor Mike DeWine, and JobsOhio. Ohio Federal Research Network Reports Successful Testing for New UAS Initiative

The Ohio Federal Research Network hosted a demonstration of several projects under its “Sustaining Ohio's Aeronautical Readiness and Innovation in the Next Generation Rounds 3 and 4” (SOARING) initiative at the Springfield-Beckley Airport. Multiple unmanned aerial systems were tested and successfully integrated with SkyVision to detect and avoid other aircraft and other flight path obstacles while remotely operated by the pilot.

Several of these Ohio-based projects also announced that they’ll receive additional funding from the U.S. Air Force flying orb program: Agility Prime.

SkyVision Team Wins AUVSI XCELLENCE Award

The SkyVision team in Ohio – a joint effort between the Air Force Research Laboratory, Air Force Life Cycle Management Center, the state of Ohio, and industry partners – has been selected as the first-place winner in the Technology & Innovation (Hardware – Platform) category of the 2020 Association for Unmanned Vehicles Systems International Awards.
