Kauffman Index Shows Start-up Businesses Continue to Grow in Ohio Metropolitans

The Kauffman Index of Entrepreneurship, a series of annual reports measuring U.S. entrepreneurship across national, state and top 40 metro levels, recently released its 2016 figures, and three Ohio metropolitans turned out some impressive numbers.

According to the Kauffman Index of Growth Entrepreneurship, Cincinnati, Cleveland and Columbus all made the top 20 list for U.S. entrepreneurial business growth. Among the metropolitan rankings, Cincinnati made the most notable leap, moving up 19 spots from 35 to number 16. Cleveland landed the number 19 spot, up from 26 in 2015. Columbus remained in the top five for a second year, moving up to number four, up one from 2015.

The Kauffman Index of Growth Entrepreneurship looks at growth business activity for startups, for scale-ups and by industry. The report listed Information Technology Services as the top-ranking industry overall.

Recent rankings from the Kauffman Foundation caught the attention of CNBC. The business news outlet identified Columbus as a growing mecca for small business, citing nearly 72 startups for every 1,000 businesses in the Central Ohio city. Entrepreneurs who started Print Syndicate and Hot Chicken Takeover talked to CNBC about how talent and access to Ohio’s favorable business climate contributed to their success.
