Fuyao Glass America Celebrates Grand Opening of Moraine Plant
After three years of anticipation, Fuyao Glass America, a subsidiary of China-based Fuyao Group, celebrated the grand opening of its newest U.S. plant in Moraine, Ohio, on Oct. 7 with a host of dignitaries and approximately 700 guests.
According to Fuyao Chairman Cao Dewang, the company invested nearly $600 million to convert the former General Motors assembly plant into the world’s largest glass production facility. The investment is China’s largest ever in Ohio and eighth largest in the Unites States in the last decade.
The plant already employs 2,000 workers and, according to Chairman Cao, Fuyao is expected to add up to 1,000 more in the next few years. The Oct. 7 ceremony marked the beginning of full-scale production after several months of trial runs. The plant has the capacity to produce 4 million automotive glass sets and 4 million replacement windshields annually, according to a company news release.
Fuyao’s presence in Ohio is an outstanding example of direct foreign investment as well as international cooperation. Local, regional and state economic development leaders worked with Fuyao officials the past three years to find a location, support redevelopment of the facility, recruit employees and begin operations.
“Fuyao could have chosen anywhere, but you chose Ohio and our people,” Lt. Gov. Mary Taylor said after presenting a gift to Chairman Cao. “You are helping to drive Ohio’s comeback.”
